Tulip set to make 150 members of staff redundant

Meat products’ manufacturer Tulip is set to make up to 150 employees redundant after failing to secure a contract, a news report reveals.

The company, which owns the Spam, Danepak bacon and Stagg brands, will have to let people go at all three of its manufacturing sites, located in Bodmin, Boston in Lincolnshire and King’s Lynn in Norfolk, but vows to try and relocate as many as workers as possible.

Currently, Tulip has 17 sites throughout the UK including in Bugle near St Austell, Redruth and Westerleigh, and has already moved production from a closed site in Merseyside to the facilities in King’s Lynn and Bodmin. More than 200 jobs were lost at the Transfood plant in 2012.

Group HR director Kirsty Wilkins said in a statement: "We are currently operating in an extremely challenging economic environment which has led to the need to announce proposed changes at three of our sites as a result of a failing to secure a tender. We have therefore entered into consultation with colleagues whose roles are potentially at risk of redundancy and are working closely with them to, wherever possible, lessen the impact of this announcement."
