Plymouth University to get £25m medical research centre

Plans for building a brand new £25m research centre for the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry have been fully revealed, a new report in the local business media has revealed.

The facility, dubbed the Centre for Translational and Stratified Medicine (CTSMed), will bring together research from Plymouth University, the university’s Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. It is designed to support work in areas such as neuroscience, infections, cancers, immunities and inflammations.

Professor Wendy Purcell, vice-chancellor at Plymouth University, said: "The work of CTSMed, in partnership with the NHS and other research bodies, has the ability to directly and positively impact on human health worldwide but also crucially address the very real health inequalities on our own doorstep."

Ann James, chief executive of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, added: "Research and clinical trials are a daily part of the work at the trust. The new research centre is great news for Plymouth and will allow for even further collaboration with our partners, for the benefit of our patients."
