Plans put forward for 2,000 new homes in Taunton

A consortium of residential developers has put forward plans for building a 2,000 home garden community scheme in Taunton, a recent news report in the local business media has been able to reveal.

Plans include two neighbourhoods connected by a network of green spaces, with links to Taunton town centre, as well as provision for a new primary school, a park-and-ride scheme, a local centre with shops and community facilities, new playing pitches and cycle routes, allotments and public open space.

The group of companies applying for planning permission comprises Taylor Wimpey UK, Mactaggart & Mickel, Bovis Homes and Summerfield Developments.

Kevin Parker, urban design director at Barton Willmore, said: "This proposal seeks to provide a new sustainable community which sits comfortably in its rural context and reflects the distinctive character of Taunton and nearby villages.

"It will provide homes for people at all stages of life along with employment opportunities within walkable distances."
