Plans approved for 21-storey student block and hotel in Plymouth

Plans for building a 21-storey student block and hotel in Plymouth have been given the green light by the city’s council, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

The building will include beds for 554 students as well as a 105-bed hotel, 20,000 sq ft of office space and 1,603 sq ft of flexible retail space. It will be built on the site of the former Money Centre at Drake Circus.

The construction costs of the tower are expected to run to £38m over the two-and-a-half year build, with the plans supporting 374 full time jobs. The annual spend from the new students brought to the site is predicted to be £8.4m

The proposals were lodged by national consultancy Pegasus Group on behalf of a London-based property development company.

Jim Tarzey, executive director at Pegasus Group, said: "This is an exciting mixed-use development proposal that will result in a new ‘tall building’ of high quality design on a prime gateway site that will be a welcome addition to the Plymouth skyline.

"The scheme delivers a package of overall benefits to the local economy, including replacement Grade A office accommodation and a new hotel on site, as well as indirect benefits such as financial contributions to the area and a new office development on the regeneration scheme adjacent to Plymouth Railway Station.”
