New town set to be created near Plymouth

A group of high-profile residential developers decided to join forces for the creation of a brand-new town on a 1,200 acre site near Plymouth, a new report in the local business media has revealed.

The group is led by developer and project founder Red Tree and also includes some other big names such as Taylor Wimpey, Bovis Homes and Linden Homes. The site earmarked for the scheme is located five miles to the east of Plymouth between Dartmoor and the South Devon Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty.

When the project is complete, Sherford is expected to feature 5,500 new homes, a market square and a shopping high street. There will also be a park, a library, a youth centre, a health centre, a children’s centre, a religious building and a sports centre with a swimming pool.

The retail and commercial areas are expected to support at least 5,000 jobs.

The Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) is supporting the development with an investment of up to £32m.

Colin Molton, executive director for the South and South West at the HCA, said: "This vitally important development will make a huge difference in meeting the need for new and affordable homes in Devon and Plymouth and provide a major boost to the South West’s economy.

"After years of work by partners to get to this stage, this is going to be a big year for Sherford. I am looking forward to seeing work starting on site soon."
