South West employers reveal extensive redundancy plans

Somerset publisher Haynes, as well as A&P Falmouth, two important employers from the South West region, have just announced some concerning redundancy plans, a news report in the local media has revealed.

Haynes, which is best-known for its car repair manuals, said it planned to focus its business on the areas with the largest growth potential, namely DIY manuals, information systems for use by professional mechanics and and the expansion of its digital offering.

Given this situation, the company has commenced a consultancy period with staff with a "small number" of redundancies being proposed from its books division.

Furthermore, Haynes also revealed plans to close its distribution site in Yeovil and outsource work to an external provider. However, all staff involved will transfer under TUPE regulations.

Meanwhile, ship repair company A&P Falmouth has started a 30-day consultation about a proposed restructure. Up to 78 roles could be lost as part of the plans.

The company said the repair cycle of the Ministry of Defence’s ships along with delays to the dredging of Falmouth Harbour to allow access by larger vessels and losing out on a major contract has meant a "temporary reduction" to its workforce is "unavoidable".
