South West manufacturing sector records significant growth
Small to medium sized (SME) manufacturers in the South West are considering investing more into future development and also hiring more staff in order to cope with increased demand, figures from the latest Barometer from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) suggest.
Over half (59 per cent) of businesses have reported sales growth in the last six months, a trend thatâ had a positive influence on recruitment plans, as almost half (49 per cent) of respondents indicate they plan to engage more staff, a news source can reveal.
Manufacturers’ confidence is also growing, with 44 per cent of the companies questioned stating they intend to invest in developing new technologies, which is the highest number recorded when measured against the same period in previous years.
Simon Howes, MAS Area Director for South West England, said: "Our survey suggests that the region’s SME manufacturers are more than playing their part in helping to create a strong base for the country’s economic recovery. While there are still challenges ahead as businesses strive to provide value and quality while managing an increasing cost base, it is important that we give recognition to the strength of the sector here in the South West."
